A septic tank is an underground chamber made of concrete, fiberglass, or plastic, into which domestic wastewater flows. Solids settle to the bottom, forming sludge, while fats and oils rise to the top, creating scum. Between these two layers is a liquid layer that can flow out into a drain field where it's further treated by the soil.
